Over 157,000 work visas were issued by the Foreign Office in 2023, with 79,000 of those being granted to skilled workers. Since its introduction on June 1, the Opportunity Card has not had much of an impact; only 200 visas have been granted through this scheme.

The Opportunity Card’s fundamental qualifications include proficiency in German or English as well as at least two years of accredited vocational training or an equivalent university degree. Candidates are awarded points according to their age, professional experience, German ties, and language ability.

Those with qualifications in shortage occupations will receive extra points. Those who reach a certain number of points can travel to Germany and have a year to locate a long-term position. A two-year extension that is granted once is feasible under specific circumstances. Since 2020, Germany has had a skilled immigration law in place.
